Freshly juiced vegetables, especially greens, can additionally fortify a whole foods diet with bonus nutrients. And healing bodies have an increased need for bio-available nutrition. However, it’s taken some experimenting to figure out how to successfully include juicing in a way that compliments my low-FODMAP, ketogenic diet.

If you’ve struggled to incorporate raw juices in the past, or would like to start juicing but aren’t sure how to make it fit your healing diet, this guide’s for you.

Juice like a pro: Load the juicer up with leafy greens (my favorites include nutrient dense herbs) then use a bit of juicier vegetables to help push them through.

Tips for Juicing on a Low-FODMAP Diet:

Be curious when it comes to juicing higher FODMAP vegetables you wouldn’t normally digest well whole. I’ve found I tolerate a greater variety of vegetables by juicing them, and I can often be more flexible with the amounts as well.

Strain your juices. It further increases the digestibility of the juice. This has been key for me. When I started taking the time to strain my juices I noticed I could enjoy not only larger quantities of juice, but also greater diversity. Now I often include the vegetables that I avoid as part of my Low-FODMAP diet in my juices without issue.

Tips for Juicing on a Low Carb/Ketogenic Diet:

 Make greens the star of your juice and enjoy smaller, more chlorophyll and nutrient dense portions.

But what about taste? Won’t a super green juice be super bitter? 

Blending juices with oil will improves their palatability, even if they start out strong. The added oil, once blended, eliminates the need for extra sweet veggies or fruit. However, if you choose, you can also add a few drops of stevia (if not strictly AIP.) These juices are good for you. So help yourself to enjoy it and receive all that vibrant nourishment gratefully.

Blend your juice with 1-2 tablespoons of MCT oil, or another high quality oil. I’ve experimented with many oils and also enjoy hemp, flax, and olive with my juices. The added oil will slow down the absorption rate the juice’s otherwise readily available carbs and ensure that your drink is primarily fat-based when it comes to calories. Note: nut and seed oils are not AIP compliant. To keep your juice AIP use avocado, MTC coconut oil, or olive oil.

MCT (medium chain triglycerides) oil is derived from coconut fat, remains liquid at room temperature, and bends well with cool, fresh juices. It also has the unique capacity to quickly rev up the liver’s production of ketones.

Including MTC oil creates an allowance for increased carb consumption without diminishing ketosis, so if strictly ketogenic, I recommend using MCT oil in your juices. Other oils are equally tasty but won’t have the same effect on ketone production.

Wellness Tip: If you’re new to MCT oil, start with a smaller amount at first as it can have laxative properties!

Add 1-2 tablespoons supplemental fiber to your juices when blending. When people think “low carb” they usually think about the total number of calories from carbohydrates. But when it comes to ketosis, what really matters is the Net Carbs.

Net Carbs are the amount of carbohydrates consumed minus the amount of fiber they contain. So while keeping my total carb count low is required for maintaining a ketogenic state, including more fiber helps keep my Net Carbs down, even if I include a bit more carbohydrates.
