My Lyme Protocols: Summer ’15

This post is part of an on-going series detailing my holistic treatment plan for healing Autoimmune Lyme Disease, it’s co-infections, and co-factors. (Which I’m sharing for purely informational purposes of course.) My healing protocols are based on  Dr. Klinghardt’s Biological treatment for Lyme. Every day in every way I am being healed. Because I believe it, I know it’s true.

This month’s meeting with my naturopathic Lyme doctor went really well. We went over my recent lab results and talked more about my upcoming dental surgeries. Last month I had a deep cleaning with my new Systemic Dentist which resulted in some serious oral detoxing. Bacteria that was flushed out from along my gum line ended up draining into my stomach and small intestines resulting in three weeks of poor appetite, GI distress, and nausea. Not much fun, but an excellent opportunity to practice intuitive + intentional eating!

This experience has confirmed the necessity of having the cavitation infections in my jaw surgically removed. These gangrenous infections are clearly causing intestinal and digestive upset and contributing to my Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO.) So my Dr and I are in agreement; In order to move forward with my healing I need to have these surgeries so I’m taking steps to make this happen.

As for the results of my recent blood work, they were pretty exciting: they confirmed that I have Lyme Disease. This is actually the first time that Lyme has shown itself in my labs. Even though I was diagnosed almost two years ago as having Chronic Lyme Disease, the diagnosis was based on my symptoms and the presence of multiple co-infections. Finally having paperwork that shows the infection via various markers won’t change my treatments, but it does offer some validation.

All of my symptoms fall under the umbrella of Chronic Autoimmune Lyme Disease, and at last it’s official.

Antimicrobials

I’m continuing to follow all of my antimicrobial protocols from last month with Quintessence being my primary Lyme treatment. This month I’ve increased my dosage of Cryptolepis, a tincture that’s specifically targeting some of my co-infections, including Babesia. I’m super sensitive so my Dr and I have learned to increase my dosages very slowly. Rushing into intense treatments has caused more harm than good in the past. I’ve found that being cautious and mindful in regard to the pace of my healing and detoxification has been the best approach for long-term results.

Nutritional Support

The results from my blood work showed that while my overall nutritional status is good, I do have some low level deficiencies again, in particular Zinc and Vitamin D. I supplement daily with Vitamin D3 + K2, but for now I’ll be doubling my dosage and taking 4,000 IU. Studies have shown that our absorption rate for Vitamin D is highest around 7 a.m. so I take mine around then. Eating fats at the same time also increases absorption  of this vital fat soluble vitamin, so I enjoy my D with a cup of creamy blended coffee.

To correct my mineral deficiencies I’m starting on two new supplements: Micro Minerals for trace minerals and Core for Zinc. Much of our soil now a days is mineral depleted, which means so is our food. While I rely on my nutrient dense diet to meet most of my nutritional needs, supplementing trace minerals is becoming increasing important. My Dr also said that low levels of Zinc are common in people with chronic or systemic infection. Along with supplementation she is also recommending I include more dietary sources of Zinc like shellfish and red meat.

I developed my Mixed Seafood Scampi with Asparagus and Leek Greens based on my Doctor’s suggestion. It’s a delicious source of Zinc and by making it with grass fed ghee you’ll be gaining dietary Vitamin D as well. It’s real food for real nutrition!

New Protocols

This month I’m starting on a new liver and gallbladder detox using a liquid supplement by Physician’s Standard. I’ll be using two bottles worth of their Liver Detox throughout the cleanse while continuing to do coffee enemas 3-4 times a week. For cellular integrity and additional liver and nervous system support I’m adding in LipoSorb, a dietary form of phosphatidylcholine.

Phosphatidylcholine is an integral component of every cell in the human body and a precursor to important neurotransmitters. For these reasons intravenous phosphatidylcholine is a main proponent of the PK Protocol for healing neurological disorders including Lyme Disease.  Finances don’t currently allow for regular IV therapy, so I’m including LipoSorb as a more affordable way to incorporate this essential phospholipid.

This healing is real. More and more I’m able to get out and do the things I love, like shopping for vibrant veggies at our local Farmer’s Market.

I’m incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to heal as much as I have and I look forward to healing further. All of my Lyme Disease treatments are paid for out of pocket. The fact is, I have healed in part because I’ve had the resources to do so. It can be difficult having the bulk of our income going towards this healing process, but ultimately I am crazy blessed: Wonderhubs and I have been able to manage it.

I know others aren’t as fortunate. It breaks my heart that health has become a class issue. Healing shouldn’t be luxury for the financially well-off, but often it is. Unfortunately, we’ve finally reached a point where we can no longer keep up with the increasing costs of my treatments. As for my upcoming dental surgeries, they won’t be covered by insurance either. That’s why I recently created a YouCaring account in order to raise money for my surgeries and to help pay for my continued treatments. It’s time to visualize abundance!

I have made so much progress, and reclaimed so much of my life, but I still have a lot of healing to do. I love this wild + messy existence and all it can teach us. Thanks to my journey with illness, I’ve found a way to channel my passions for natural living and healthy cooking towards a greater purpose: to help others find Hope and Heal. Being able to connect with YOU seriously makes my spirit sing. That’s why I’m so jazzed about the healing process: the more I heal, the more I can dedicate myself to doing what I love and sharing it with others.
